How to Travel to Socotra in 2027 : Flights, Ferry, Visa and Practical Tips

Socotra draws more and more travellers looking for raw landscapes, unique biodiversity and off-the-beaten-track adventure. But this Yemeni island is still hard to reach and takes careful preparation. Here is a complete guide to how to get to Socotra, by plane or by ferry, the current entry conditions, the visa, and the essential tips for planning your trip.

Can you travel to Socotra?

Can you travel to Socotra in 2027 ?

Yes, you can travel to Socotra, but it is not a destination like any other. The political situation in Yemen means travel is closely managed, and access is mainly through organised tours. Since 2023-2025, the island has been reachable by plane or by boat, but independent arrivals are rare and complicated. Most visitors go through specialised agencies that handle transport, accommodation and paperwork.

The Socotra visa: a step you do not handle yourself

A Yemeni visa is mandatory for almost every nationality. The key point to understand: you cannot apply for it as an independent traveller. Your local tour operator vouches for you and files the application on your behalf, usually as part of a package.

What you provide: a scan of your passport, valid for at least six months beyond your return date. Every nationality can file an application.

Processing time: 7 to 10 days with some operators, up to three weeks with others. Allow a month of margin.

Cost: from €70 to USD 150 depending on the operator. Some packages include it, others do not: get that point confirmed in writing before you pay a deposit.

Validity: 30 days from the date of entry.

One limit to know: a Socotra visa does not allow you to travel to mainland Yemen, and the other way round too. Two destinations, two visas.

Visa through a tour operator: the simpler option

Flights to Socotra: which airlines and at what price?

The island is served by Socotra Airport (code SCT), near Hadibo. Every flight is operated by Yemenia Airways, and none of them can be booked online: the ticket goes through your agency or your tour operator.

From Jeddah (Saudi Arabia), the main route

This is now the simplest and most widely used way in. Yemenia operates flight IY 525 outbound and IY 526 on the return, on an Airbus A320.

2026/27 season: from 6 October 2026 to 22 April 2027

Frequency: one to two rotations a week, on Tuesdays and, some weeks, on Thursdays. Sources disagree on how regular that second rotation is: have your operator confirm the exact date before you buy your connecting flights.

Indicative times: departure from Jeddah at 11:00, arrival in Socotra at 14:00. Return from Socotra around 14:45, arrival in Jeddah around 19:00. A short technical stop in Al-Mukalla on some rotations.

Price: around USD 950 return

Worth knowing: the A320 keeps the number of seats low. Confirm your Socotra flight before booking a non-refundable flight to Jeddah.

From Al-Mukalla (mainland Yemen)

Roughly one rotation a week, on Sundays, for about USD 250 one way. This option assumes you are already on the Yemeni mainland, which is another trip and another visa.

From Cairo via Aden

This route still exists, but it is considerably heavier:

a layover in Aden of about 12 hours;

a separate Aden visa is mandatory, to be applied for online, and the physical visa has to be collected on the spot by a local operator;

budget around USD 1,180.

Only worth considering if Jeddah is impossible for you. In that case, put the night in Cairo before the Aden flight into the budget from the start: see the hotels near Cairo airport.

What about Abu Dhabi?

The Abu Dhabi to Socotra charter, operated by Air Arabia, was suspended in January 2026. It still appears in plenty of guides online. If you come across an article sending you to Abu Dhabi, it has not been updated since the start of the year.

The Saudi visa: the step everyone forgets

Now that Jeddah has become the gateway to Socotra, a second visa question comes up, and it catches a lot of travellers out.

If you only make a short transit inside Jeddah airport, without clearing immigration, no Saudi visa is needed.

If you sleep in Jeddah or your layover runs longer than a day, which is very often the case given the timing of connecting flights from Europe, you need a Saudi visa. Nationals of eligible countries can get a tourist e-visa online: it allows multiple entries over a year and stays of up to 90 days.

Since the Socotra flight takes off at 11:00, arriving the evening before is the most comfortable scenario. In that case, plan for the Saudi e-visa on top of the Yemeni visa. Two separate applications, two countries, two processing times.

That night in Jeddah is the only one of the whole trip you book yourself, since everything else goes through your operator. Lock it in at the same time as the Yemenia ticket rather than at last-minute rates, and aim for a hotel close to the airport given that the flight leaves late morning. Compare the hotels in Jeddah for the night before the flight.

Can you get to Socotra by ferry?

No, and it is a question that comes up a lot because several guides still mention the possibility.

There is currently no passenger sea link a foreign traveller can use. Cargo ships do run between mainland Yemen and Socotra, but they are irregular, slow and not fitted out to carry passengers. A boat service to the port of Al-Mukalla exists for island residents, yet it is not open to foreigners.

In practice: flying is currently the only official way into Socotra. If you read a guide offering you a ferry ticket for USD 50 to 100, that information is out of date.

Ferry to Socotra island

How to book transport to Socotra

Whether for flights or the ferry, it is strongly recommended to book well in advance through organised tours or local agencies. Direct online bookings for flights are very rare, and the ferries are not available on standard booking sites. Specialised agencies take care of transport, the visa and your welcome on arrival.

Can you travel to Socotra on your own?

Travelling independently in Socotra is difficult, if not impossible, because of:

  • the lack of public transport,
  • security restrictions,
  • the visa requirement,
  • the absence of standard tourist infrastructure.

Most travellers choose an organised tour, including a guide, transport, campsites or accommodation, and a 4x4. It is the safest and simplest way to explore the island.

Practical tips for planning your trip

A few essential recommendations:

  • Prepare your visa application several weeks before you leave.
  • Book flights in advance through an agency.
  • Lock in the layover hotel night at the same time as the flights rather than afterwards: availability in Jeddah can be checked here.
  • Arrange local support (guide + 4x4 on site).
  • Accept basic and sometimes unpredictable logistics.
  • Check the safety guidelines before you go.

Socotra: a trip for well-prepared adventurers

Socotra is a unique destination, but it takes organisation and flexibility. Between the mandatory visa, the limited flights, the rare ferry and the political situation, you need to plan ahead and go through local professionals. In return, you will discover one of the most extraordinary places on the planet, far from mass tourism.
